Taxi

Taxis in Thailand are rather cheap and a good way of transportation. It is better though to take the Skytrain or underground around 5 to 7 pm (if you can reach your destination by using them). There are a lot of taxis driving around and it is not very hard to find a taxi.
I also like to look at the newer generation of taxis and if any taxi smells like smoke, I will tell the taxi driver and wait for another taxi. Taxis are almost all with meter. The meter starts at THB 35 (less then 1 USD/EURO). A trip of 5 to 10 minutes will cost around 50 THB (around 1 Euro).

Skytrain (BTS) and Underground (MRT)

Both the skytrain and underground are very good and clean ways of transportation. The only disadvantage is that it does not yet reach or cover whole Bangkok. If you happen to be close to the underground and the destination is so too, than these two are probably the best pricewise and fastest. Here is a link to the maps of the BTS and MRT

Tuk-tuks are an experience to take, just to know what it is like and just to have had a ride in a tuk-tuk. Besides that, I prefer a taxi. When sitting in a tuk-tuk, one should bend to be able to see anything, and that is rather unconfortable. A tuk-tuk is an option though, if you should go for just a short distance, as it will be cheaper than a taxi. If the distance is long(er) though, a tuk-tuk is not any cheaper than a taxi, and I would advise you to take a taxi for the confort instead. Please have a look at this gorgeous Tuk-tuk picture book that has very recently been published.

Bus

When I just arrived in Thailand, I used to take the busses a lot. As you do not have to wait a long time for a bus and because they are so very cheap. For tourists that are not in a hurry (as the trip itself could take longer than when taking a taxi) and that have a limited budget, busses are a good option. You can sometimes also see it as a roundtrip, as you can enjoy looking around and see street life in Bangkok. Here you can find a Map with buslines in Bangkok and here follows a very usefull link with written information on all kinds of busses (Airbus, Mini bus, Vanbus, Expresswaybus), routing, what busses pass certain tourist attractions, etc. Very usefull bus info for in and around Bangkok.

When arriving in Bangkok by plane, or when going to the airport, special airportbus service is available going to Bangkok City or from the city back to the airport. Here you will find information on the routing of these busses Airportbus information

There is also a very extensive bus service to the other provinces. Even though I prefer taking the train or plane if possible, not all places can be reached by train, and then the bus service is practical. I will hereby give you the official links to the different timetables, showing price, distance, travel time and departure time.

Boat

Taking a boat can be a way of transportation or can be a tourist attraction. As a tourist, you should at least have taken a boat trip. You can do this the cheap way, by just taking a Chao Phraya Express boat trip (starting price is 9 THB) or for a bit more a Canal trip (100 THB). It is nice to observe life along the river just by taking any boat. Besides the nice part, the boat can also be a cheap way of transportation.
If your destination is close to the river 'Chao Phraya' and your starting point is not that far from the river either (you could take the skytrain to the river), then go for it. One thing though, if you have difficulty walking or are very slow, maybe the boat is not convenient as the boat just floats for a little while and would not wait when you do not succeed to step on the boat.
Here I will provide you with the official link to the Chao Phraya Express Boat Co.,Ltd Here you will find information on the Express Boats, Charter Boats, Tourist Boats and places of interest to visit close to the river etc.

Motorcycle taxis

A motorcycle taxi is a taxi driver that uses a motorcycle to transport you from here to there. When you are in Bangkok, you can very often see groups of motorcycles next to the road that are wearing orange or sometimes other coloured vests. These are all motorcycle taxis. It is very practical when there is a traffic jamp and when you are sure you will not get in time by taxi, then you can use a motorcycle taxi. Also it is a good option when you have to go deep inside a street (Soi), so you do not have to walk, but just sit on the back of the motorcycle for around 10 THB.
For longer distances it is practicle but it is of course more dangerous given the fact that you are more vurnerable on a motorcycle than inside a taxi and seen the fact that you will be given some cheap kind of helmet, that does not give you any protection in case of an accident. When you take a motorcycle, you have to agree on the price first and then go. A trip of 2 km would be around 40 - 50 THB, depending on traffic and depending on the way they have to take back.

Train
The train in Thailand is a cheap way of transportation for long distances and it is safer than taking the long distance bus service. Thailand has several lines going to the North-East (Ubon, Udon, Nong Khai) North (Chiang Mai) East (Aranyaprathet) West (Kanchanaburi) and the South (Hua Hin, Surrathani and down to Malaysia, Singapore). Even though it takes long, it is nice to see the many faces of Thailand, but as it takes really very long (if you go far away), I would also advise you to take a book so you won't get bored.
Also I would advise you not to take the 3rd class train, but go at least for a second class airconditioned train. The 1st and 2nd class sleeper seats are good for long distances. Here you will find a link to some travelling programs from The State Railway of Thailand Trip to Hua Hin, Waterfalls, Kanchanaburi and Historical places and a link to the Railway Network. You will also be able to find prices, timetables and other information in that same website. Tickets can be bought at any train station (or some travel agencies ) . The name of the trainstation in bangkok is: Hualamphong station at Rama IV Road. Say to taxi: Pai Sathani Rotfai Hualamphong.
Plane

Thai Airways (TG) , Air Asia (AK), Bangkok Airways (PG), PB Air (9Q) and Nok Air (DD) operate regular domestic flights from/to Bangkok to/from major provincial destinations. Online bookings can be made through each of their websites following the links given above. You could check each of their prices and then decide upon a flight.
In general, it is Thai Airways that has the most expensive flights, but there is more choice than with the other airlines, one can choose between more flights and changing from one flight to another is not difficult. Instead, with some of the other airlines, it is hard or impossible to change a flight afterwards. If you happen to miss the plane with Air Asia, then you might just have to buy yourself a new ticket. So for each of the airlines, please read the small letters.
